The Magic of Fashion Illustrations & My Favorite Illustrators – Rene Gruau & Alfredo Cabrera

Posted in Dior with tags , , , , , on March 13, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

It’s another cold spring night in San Francisco bay area, as I am relaxing on my sofa, sipping some hot Jasmine pearl tea from my favorite Le Palais des Thés, I was flipping through some of the art books I’ve collected since I was a fashion student at Parson School of Design back in 1992 in New York City, there I came across a book of my favorite fashion illustrator Rene Gruau.

Before the adobe photoshop, illustrators and other computer art programs, a fashion illustrator is the key person to translate a designer’s vision from the runway to the general public! To me, Rene Gruau was the greatest fashion illustrator! With his trademark use of his powerful minimal lines, a gash of bright lips or a wash of color, Gruau’s style combined seductive sophistication with classic beauty, grace and sensual elegance. He had captured the spirit of haute couture & the glory days of Parisian high fashion with his pen and brushes.

Rene Gruau was born in Italy in 1909. In the 1940‘s and 50‘s Gruau became a favorite of the haute couture world, working with Femina, Marie-Claire, L’Officiel, L’Album Du Figaro and other “high-style” magazines. Some of Gruau’s best work can be seen in the dramatic visual statements he rendered for Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Hubert de Givenchy. In 1948 Rene Gruau left for the United States to work for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, before becoming the exclusive artist for FLAIR. He also produced stunningly beautiful advertisements for the LIDO, MOULIN ROUGE and BEMBERG. His illustrations had totally influence on modern day fashion advertising and photography.

After enjoying Gruau’s beautiful illustration book, it reminded me to check out the blog (Mamie N Baby) from another one of my favorite fashion illustrator, Alfredo Cabrera. He is a seasoned fashion designer whom had designed for Geoffrey Beene, Polo Ralph Lauren, Victor Alfaro also had lend his talented fashion illustration skills to ad campaigns & window displays to Henri Bendel, Missoni, Gianfranco Ferre, Tommy Hilfiger, Hollister and many more famous fashion houses.

I love how “free” and “easy” the lines flows in his illustrations! The women in his sketches all has this effortless high fashion elegance feel to it and translate glamour in a casual and approachable way that you can totally relate to!

He currently an Asst. Professor at Parsons School of Design teaching the lucky few students how to draw beautiful fashion illustrations and his long anticipated book “ 101 Things I Learned in Fashion School” with Matthew Frederick will be release on May 20th, 2010. I can’t wait to get a copy of this book!! It’s now ready for pre-order from Barnes & Noble – Click here or Amazon.com – Click here. If you are into fashion illustrations, then this is a must-have book for you!

I hope you enjoy these beautiful illustrations as much I do and inspire you to pick up a pencil and start sketching! Oh! don’t forget to visit & subscribe to Alfredo Cabrera’s blog! Click here to visit his fabulous “Mamie N Baby” & enjoy his fashion illustrations.

Until next time, be well & look fabulous!

Posted in Celebrity & Entertainment, Dior with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 1, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Dior has done it again! Besides their fabulous clothing & accessories collections, even their AD campaigns are now captivate our imaginations! Directed by Olivier Dahan , featuring French actress Marion Cotillard, Dior has released a mini film of its own – a lady James Bond adventure. For this ad campaign, Dior has invited 2008 Oscar winning French actress Marion Cotillard as its advertisement spokesperson as well as the famous photographer Peter Lindbergh to take shots. Taking a fancy to Marion’s noble temperament, so Dior selected her to be the model who can match with the new Lady Dior Cannage Bag perfectly.

“Chapter 1: A Lady Noire Affair”. The film shows off the men in perfectly pressed Dior Homme suits, and Marion Cotillard rushing up the Eiffel Tower in amazing black heels, distinctly shaped “Diorette” sunglasses and the Lady Dior Handbag. Dior has cleverly put their best selling handbag on display with a short film and the episodes will continue. I’ll be blissfully await the next video made in New York “Lady Rouge”.

Below you can view “The Lady Noire Affair”, which was released in May. Do not expect to get all the answers right away. If you pay careful attention there are clues provided. So who will save lady Dior? We will have to wait and see.

It’s said that the reason why this bag is so famous is kinda related with our familiar Princess Diana. “In 1995, at the Cezanne Art Exhibition sponsored by Dior Corporation, the former French First Lady Bernadette Chirac sent Princess Diana a new model of Christian Dior bags as a gift.” Then Dior immediately named this unreleased bag “Lady Dior” – gracefully to the name extremely. And Diana also liked this bag so much that she carried it in many important official occasions, then this bag has fired up.

This latest Lady Dior Cannage Bag 2009 is crafted by the soft supple suede which sends out a light lambency, patterned with cannage embroidery and logo cannage jacquard lining. With unique cannage geometric surface and two hemicycle handles, it’s also attached with silver Dior logo metal hard ware and the metal protective feet. Besides, there is an open top with protective flap closure on top and a zipped pocket inside. Available in two colors: black and brown. Posted in Celebrity & Entertainment, Fendi with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 30, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

OMG! I am crazy about this Limited Edition FENDI Grey Jersey Peekaboo Satchel w/ Hot Pink Leather Lining!! It’s so uptown chic yet downtown cool! Combining the everyday material as the jersey fabric that we wear as the sweatshirt with luxurious hot pink color leather, it’s a must have for every hip fashionistas!

Avaliable at Luxe-Gifts.com

The Fendi Peek-a-Boo bag is an “underground” celebrity it bag. It’s a pretty low-key handbag, , but it just screams luxury.

We’ve been reporting many different style of the Fendi Peekaboo Satchel in our blog, but this new jersey peekaboo is one of my favorite one, because it has a very similar shape to the Hermes Kelly bag, but this Fendi Peekaboo satchel has a classic shape without seeming “snoby” and bourgeois like the Hermes Kelly…. and it’s way more hip and easy to carry. Don’t get me wrong i love Hermes, but compare to Fendi’s peekaboo, I like this bag more, it’s just my opinion.

• Light grey jersey fabric with hot pink leather lining.
• Goldtone and silvertone hardware.
• Top handle with rings; 4 1/2″ drop.
• Adjustable, removable shoulder strap; 25″ drop.
• Framed top; turn-lock closure.
• Button-tabs on sides.
• Two interior pockets; one zip, one open.• Includes dust bag.

Dior Granville Satchel Tote Is a Must Have Bag !

Posted in Dior with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 24, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

I’ve always love Christian Dior’s fashion, and their accessories are just fabulous! They are must have for all the fashonistas! Today when I browse the Dior official site, I found the newly released Dior Granville Collection & there comes a Dior bag that I just need to have it!

Available at Luxe-Gifts.com

You must be wondering why this bag is named “Granville”? well, Monsieur Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy. I find the hand stitching of the “cannage” detail so beautiful! because they are slightly irregular and they’re 3 dementional. The detail is achieve through pin tucking the leather so it is actually a part of the bag rather than applied, so the intersections of the lines are a bit off. You would think this is a flaw but it is done so well that it is just a perfect example of DIOR’s superior quality and worksmanship.

Of course, silver-tone hardware completes its luxurious totality, which you can find on the loops and on the hanging DIOR charms. It has a zip along the top, and the hour-glass shape can actually be folded over, just like on other convertible bags we have these days. This gives you an option of whether carrying it as a handbag through its top handles with rings or as a shoulder bag through its detachable strap.

What I love the most is the multi compartments inside of the bag! The interior of the bag was divided into 3 large compartments by the big fully top sip center divider pocket compartment. so you can fit all of your stuff in and still looking stylish & fabulous!

Here is a photo of Demi Moore carrying the LARGE size granville

Even tho Ashton is super hot but I still can’t keep my eyes off Demi’s fabulous DIOR Granville

We hope you enjoy the review of this fabulous DIOR Granville satchel/tote bag, and if you like the bag, we’ve just received the size Medium Granville directly from DIOR and now available at our very own online store Luxe-Gifts.com ! come check out the bag, it will be the best investment purse you’ll ever get!

Untill next time, be well and look fabulous !

FENDI Patent Leather & Gold Color Embossed Leather Lining Peekaboo Satchel

Posted in Fendi with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 23, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think about the famous Italian fashion house “FENDI” ? those big “FF” logos all over the place right? If you love their logos then you can’t get enough of it ( Just like I am such a CHANEL “CC” logo freak! haha) but if you hated their “FF” logo then you probably would totally disregard any of the FENDI handbags.

BUT!!! Since in Spring/Summer 2009 collection continues to Fall/Winter 2009 and 2010, Fendi has came up with all different type of the new “IT BAG” name “Peekaboo Bag”. It’s sophisticated & understated! all the bells & whistles are inside of the bag! so when you close the bag all you see just a understated handbag but when you leave it open, the top droops down and reveals all different types of beautiful lining inside of the bag. From beaded “FF logo” to Fur & snakeskin lining!

Here is one of the many beautiful “Peekaboo” bag, this one is the Black Patent Leather Peekaboo with embossed Gold color checkerboard lining. (Available at Luxe-Gifts.com)

This crinkled patent Peek-A-Boo bag is so understated and ladylike that I almost can’t believe it’s Fendi. I mean, where are all the bells and whistles? There’s not even any snakeskin on this bag! The truth is that this bag doesn’t need anything extra to make it work. It has an old fashioned, sophisticated charm that defies trends.

The simple shape of the bag combined with the sleek patent material and the pronounced seams creates a sharply tailored look that will work for a lot of women. For edgier fashionistas, the Peek-A-Boo would make a great bag for the office, but I think a lot of women will find that this is a highly versatile, high quality accessory that can coordinate with a lot of looks.

The details on this bag are so luxurious and plentiful that it’s hard to know where to begin. The inside of the Peek-A-Boo is made of a fabulous laser cut suede with gold paint that will make you want to reach into your purse at every possible opportunity. The gold metal hardware is understated and beautiful. And the interior compartment of the bag is ingeniously divided into two sections, which each have pockets of their own.

Untill next time, be well and look fabulous !

The Fabulous 80s Fashions, Catfights & Caviar and The show

Posted in Celebrity & Entertainment with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 23, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

The 80s, an era of excesses, over the top fashions we would love to hate but just can’t look away. And there are some memorable TV shows that are known for their fashion and little else, and then there are those excruciating programmes where the fashion becomes the focal point, whether it intends to or not.

You might wonder what’s the hot new looks for fall 2009 fashion? Padded shoulders straight out of “Dynasty,” sequined tops fit for “Golden Girls” and the kind of pleated pants last seen on “The Facts of Life.”

Dynasty – The excesses of the ’80s meant big everything, from hair to shoulder pads. All that glitters: The nighttime soap “Dynasty” celebrated an era of excess, complete with shimmering fashions worn by leads including Evans and Joan Collins.)

Though designers have been flirting with the decade for several seasons, a clutch of marquee names delved into the era’s flashiest, most bombastic side for fall. The homage to the color-drenched era was, in some cases, so unapologetic you almost expected Joan Collins to stroll out in a Swarovski-encrusted Bob Mackie gown boasting shoulder pads meatier than twin rib eyes LOL!
(Golden Girls Fashion then and now)

Well, over the years as the fashion trends have progressed, so has the fashion on our favourite TV shows, and for the most part it has got a hell of a lot better. You can’t help but laugh at some of the campy looks sported 20 years ago on some of our fave programmes though, but hopefully through their style mistakes and triumphs, we have learnt a few of our own fashion lessons.

(Miami Vice – Don Johnson’s pastel color push-up sports jacket look was a big hit)

We’ve compiled a list of the best fashion savvy programmes to hit our screens over the years that influenced us and many people around the world how to dress in the golden eras of 80s

(Saved by the bell – all the neon color printed shirts & bleach jeans…. it was every high school kid’s must have items! yes I confess, I have couple of the polka dots big shirts & my rainbow color vans shoes LOL)

In the fall winter 2009 fashion shows, it was full of pleated, tapered pants and boatloads of neon, Marc Jacobs’ über-’80s show looked like a casting call for “Square Pegs.” Meanwhile, designer Christophe Decarnin of Balmain — the house that nudged fashion into the decade’s decadent side last season with pieces such as Michael Jackson-style jackets — harnessed the hard-edged party girl of the era with skin-tight minidresses and pointy, winged, padded shoulders.

(Pretty In Pink – How would the movie’s warring richie preps and New Wave outsiders fare in today’s fashion world? The big jackets and high-waisted chinos on pretty-boy Blane (Andrew McCarthy) might need an update — or can just be recycied as women’s wear — but Duckie’s (Jon Cryer) skinny jeans and Andie’s (Molly Ringwald) leggings and layers have been a part of street fashion for years. See, geeks win in the end.)

Considering the worldwide recession, it seems a curious time to be making such showy, fashion-forward clothes. Wasn’t it just a few months ago that women’s fashion magazines were espousing the virtues of “investment dressing”? What is it about the current climate that’s delivered us back to the ’80s? could it be people are tired of being worried about money and being sensible? Even though it wasn’t the carefree time everyone remembers it to be, the ’80s looks like the party we’ve not been allowing ourselves to have lately. It’s a denial of the recession.?

Come think of it, when we are in bad economies, clothes tend toward the staid, and in boom times the fantasy is to look downbeat and poor like the purposely stained, torned jeans, jackets, I even seen some handmade “couture tees” that makes you look like a homeless man! of course with a $250 price tag to achieve that look! haha!

And now that a tough economy is the reality, we want to look “Rich, over the top & fun!” Suddenly, we’re living the old adage of hemlines rising and lipstick colors getting brighter when the economy tanks “We’re in a tough economic time, and a lot of these ’80s-inspired looks give off the image of a strong woman,” said Gregg Andrews, fashion director for Nordstrom, which is betting on ’80s-style boyfriend blazers from Stella McCartney and shoulder-centric pieces from Donna Karan this fall. “It’s about a woman still being feminine, but not fragile or frail. The strong shoulder, the hardware on things — I look at it as being modern urban armor.

It’s true that there are few decades that have offered such a treasure trove of memorable (and cringe-inducing) looks. And in this era of anxiety, maybe the season’s key trend is to dress optimistic and adding a pop of bright neopn color into your daily wardrobe! don’t let the recession to drag you down!
