Eskimo Ice Queen & Igloo Chic At Chanel Fall Winter 2010 Collection

Posted in Chanel, Jewelry & Accessories with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 12, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Maybe Karl Lagerfeld had looked into his Swarovski crystal ball and predicted this coming winter is gonna be extremely cold! So he offers up a fabulous collection that features this mystical Eskimo chic girl who lives in the igloo castle located at an extremely cold fantasyland that only the polar bear style coats can keep her warm! Better yet, how Coco Chanel would travel to north pole and how she would dressed!

Karl Lagerfeld had never fail to surprise us season after season with his vision! At the Grand Palais Paris this week, guests arrived with an invitation that has a polar bear sketched on it and once they walked in, there was a huge white box, which sat in the middle of the stage. As the show began, the box was lifted to reveal a huge 256 tons of iceberg imported from northern Sweden.

The collection featured every luxurious materials you can think of that’s almost like a Couture show than the ready to wear! Fur was woven into tweed fabrics for jackets, coats, skirts, also was weaved into luscious cashmere, angora sweaters & dresses. Thank God it was faux fur! I would hate to see some cute little furry animals died just for our vanity, even if it’s for the fabulous CHANEL dresses!

How about the accessories & handbags in the show you might ask? All I can say, it is so “COOL” that I want almost everything! Yes there is even a bag to hold a hot water bottle; you know the red plastic thing filled with hot water to keep you warm?! Talk about keeping it warm in Luxe style! Haha. I especially love the “Ice Cube” themed bags! Cute & clear ice cube decorated the bags with CC logos and there are couple evening clutch that looks like a chunk of ice cube and pave with Swarovski crystals CC logo! Here are some photos of these fabulous bags that is a must-have for this winter!

I am calling my personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman & Chanel Boutiqes to get me on the wait-list for some of these fabulous items!! To find out more about this collection, please click here to visit CHANEL official website.

Until next time, be well and look fabulous!

Celebrate Chinese New Year In Style ! China Chic Year Of The Tiger 2010

Posted in Chanel, Food and Culture with tags , , , , , , , , on February 11, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Did you realize that Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year land on the same day this year?! It’s like “Double Happiness” on this Sunday Feb. 14th! Many of you already know about the valentine’s day, so I am dedicating this posting to Chinese New Year.  As an Chinese American, it’s time to remember our Chinese heritage & celebrate our traditions! Even the U.S. Postal service has special stamps to celebrate the year of Tiger.

The Chinese New Year is regarded as one of the most important Chinese holidays. The celebration starts on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the day of the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth.  A big feast marks the Eve of Chinese New Year (for this year it will be February 13th), complete with traditional Chinese dishes. ON the new year day, children receive money in red envelopes called “hongbao红包”from their parents and everybody wishes each other good health in the New Year.

The first day of Chinese New Year is a time when families visit the oldest and senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents.  Not everyone follows the same traditions for Chinese New Year. In northern China, families eat dumplings after dinner, while in southern China they eat rice cakes. Dumplings symbolize wealth, and rice cakes symbolize a prosperous year.  Some rituals go beyond food and gift giving and can include lighting firecrackers, invite a lion dance troupe as a symbolic ritual to usher in the Lunar New Year, as well as to evict bad spirits from the premises.

Chinese New Year rice cake “Nian gao” (年糕) sounds like “年高”, which literally means “increasingly prosperous year in year out”.

Rows of Chinese dried sausages and waxed ducks in Chinatown

Tangerines and Mandarin oranges symbolize abundance and happiness and are a must-gift when visiting relatives and friends.

In Chinatown or Chinese supermarkets, people were busily buying stuffs for the Spring festival.

The color Red is liberally used in all decoration during this festive season.  Red symbolizes good fortune. There is an ancient Chinese legend about a man-eating beast called “Nian” which is a predatory creature. To scare off Nian, people covered their homes with the color red and filled the air with loud noises, ie. fire crackers.

Chinese like to grace their gates and doors with Chinese New Year’s couplets which are written on two strips of red paper. The red couplets are composed of sentences that complement each other and often rhyme. Nowadays, we hardly see handwritten couplets; these are all printed with different designs.

Even the house of CHANEL dedicated a pre-fall 2010 collections to the “China Chic”! Here are some photos of this fabulous collection show at Shanghai, China.

So after reading and seeing all these festive Chinese new year stuff, are you all inspired and start thinking how to celebrate this Sunday? Well, here is a great idea how you can celebrate the Chinese New Year & Valentine’s day together and make it a very special “Double Happiness” holiday weekend!

“Valentine’s Day China Chic Style” – Make your own valentine’s day fortune cookies
1/2 C flour- If you have bread flour, use it.
1/2 C sugar
1 tsp vanilla- or sometimes I use 1/2 almond 1/2 vanilla
2 egg whites
(Photo & recipes courtesy of ourbestbites.com)

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend to combine. Place in a container and chill 1 hour.  Preheat oven to 400°.

The batter couldn’t be simpler. Just throw all of the ingredients (egg whites, sugar, flour, and vanilla) into a food processor and blend it up. You could also probably do it in a blender, or whisk it very well. You want zero lumps.

Pop that mix in the fridge for an hour and while it’s chilling you can prep the rest of the ingredients. First, you’ll need fortunes! Since we’re making Valentine cookies today, filled them with little love notes. Be creative!

When your batter is chilled, place 1 teaspoon on each circle and spread it out with a small spoon to fill the circle on a plain baking sheet.  Pop the pan in the oven for about 6 minutes till you see it is brown around the edges and a little towards the center.  If you underbake them they will be chewy instead of crunchy!  This is the part is a little tricky, but you’ll get the hang of it fast.  If you try to take the cookie off the pan too quickly, it will mush up like this!

but if you leave it on too long (and I’m talking seconds here), it will firm up so much that you can’t shape it. So the trick is to find that perfect time. I find that it only takes about 15-30 seconds after they come out of the oven before I can get them off the pan. Use a spatula like you see in my pictures with a nice sharp edge. I thick plastic one won’t work very well.

Remove the cookie from the pan with the spatula and flip it over. Quickly tuck your fortune in the middle and then fold the cookie in half. Bend the cookie over the edge of a bowl to set the shape.

You can leave the fortune paper peeking out so it hangs out.  They only take a minute to cool and you can pack them right up!

Since it’s the Valentine’s day is the same on the same day as Chinese new year, you can pretty up the fortune cookies with some V-day decorations.  You can use chocolate, almond bark, candy melts…etc and then sprinkle on any toppings you want.

Just dip & sprinkle anyway you like it! dip half the cookie, the outer edge, or drizzle, or whatever!

Combining the festive mood of Chinese New Year & Valentine’s day together by packaging the fortune cookies in some cute Chinese take-out boxes that you can buy from any craft stores.  Decorate anyway you like it, ribbons, glitter, lace, heart shape cut-out paper… let your imagination run wild!

We hope you enjoy this special Chinese New Year – Valentine’s day posting! Now go to your closet, find some fabulous RED color clothing, accessories or shoes and celebrate these two holidays “China Chic” style!

Gothic Chic & Dark Glamour

Posted in Chanel, D.L. & Co., Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Gothic Chic & Dark Glamour, Haute Couture, Jean Paul Gaultier, Salvatore Ferragamo, Valentino, Versace with tags , , , , , , , on January 17, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

As a fashion designer, I’m inspired by many things around me. The imagery of a photo, scenery, sounds & musics, movies… just about everything! In recent conversations with a good friend of mine on facebook about “Goth” and it inspired me to google some imageries and articles about this mysterious & fascinating lifestyle which has inspired many arts & fashions.

So what is “Goth”? in simple definitions: To some, Goth is a style of dressing; to others it’s a lifestyle. Either way, the gothic look involves very black clothing and very white makeup with edgy, tough accessories. Prime example of classic gothic style: Musician – Marilyn Mansion. But as a person with an inquiring mind ( yes I do read the trashy gossip enquirer magazine ok! Haha) I know it has to be deeper than just the black clothing, smoky eye make-ups and of course ever so dreamy vampire Robert Pattinson aka “Edward Cullen” from the hit movie “Twilight”.

So after some googling, according to Goth.net

“Most Goths become Goths because they have been spurned by ‘normal’ society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they’re told ‘This is just how it is’ or ‘This is what God says!’. Rather Goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind..”

But of course this is not the case for all Goths. Many Goths today are Goths for a variety of other reasons. They like the music, or the clubs are better, they have Goth friends and joined in with them, or they just like staying up late nights and Goths are the only ones awake to talk to.

To us the fashionistas, the theme “Goth” has inspired many fashion designers over the years and here are some of the collections I think are super fabulous & go with our topic perfectly!

Junya Watanabe

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2005

Rick Owens Fall 2006 Collection

When John Galliano was traveling south to research his couture collection during summer of 2005 he was inspired with the French Revolution stories & history, so in Dior’s Spring 2006 Couture show, blood- and gore-spattered drama was the theme and to me, it’s also very “Goth Glam” ,too!

Christian Dior 2006 Spring Haute Couture

Harper’s Bazaar Magazine October 2009 & Film Maker Tim Burton

As if Tim Burton’s characters all got together and did a fashion photoshoot, this amazing pictorial for the October edition of Harper’s Bazaar features characters from his past movies like The Night Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and more, all look amazing in designer clothing and shoes.

And for our male readers, me & mei-mei the pug didn’t forgot about you! Here are some fabulous menswear from Ann Demeulemeester Fall – Winter 2009 Collection for you! I just LOVE that chunky sweater in the middle

Of course how can we end this “Dark Glamorous” posting without mentioning one of my favorite designer Alexander McQueen!

Alexander McQueen 2007 Fall & Winter

In this collection, McQueen had put a heartfelt personal passion into a collection that was based on a startling revelation from his family history. His mother, who traces family trees, discovered that her bloodline leads back to a victim of the Salem witch trials who was hanged in the Puritan hysteria of 1692. The themes of witchcraft, paganism, and religious persecution played on the dark and angry side of McQueen’s creativity.

Here is a video of Alexander McQueen 2007 Fall & Winter totally fabulously spooky fashion show

All of you must be wondering ….how can I achieve that beautiful vampy smoky eye make-up to complete your Gothic Chic outfits & accessories?! So we have found 2 tutorials for our gal & dudes readers! Here is the female smoky eyes tutorials that shows you how to do it!

And here is the “Guyliner” smoky eyes tutorial

Larger Than Life Is Just The Right Size ! – CHANEL Giant Size Carousel Fashion Show

Posted in Chanel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 12, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Ok girls! I LOVE everything Chanel! and this is no joke! this is HUGE…. LOL … hmmm i wish i have one like this at home, where i can put all my life in ha ha
Vogue Paris August 2008

A Chanel carousel fitted out with giant quilted bags, camellias, pearls, boaters, and bows faced the audience as it poured into the Grand Palais for the Fall Ready-to-wear show. It was a fitting metaphor for the timeless turning of the house classics, and for the unstoppable machine fashion has become these days.

Lagerfeld didn’t miss a trick, from fragile, frothy, high-necked blouses to spidery knits, peplum jackets, and an intelligent exploration of how longer lengths might be worked into a winter wardrobe.

And what of austerity chic, the subject du jour? Lagerfeld’s witty take was an updated retread of Coco Chanel’s “poverty de luxe,” so that the tweed suits came with worn-through elbows or scatterings of faux-darned patches. Nothing too heavy, of course, because Lagerfeld is not one to take passing fashion issues, even recession, too seriously. But in its relative restraint, reserved color, and holding back on accessory overload, this collection was a smart way to prove that whatever goes around comes around, and ends up looking just as Chanel as ever.

OMG! this Chanel merry-go0round carousel runway stage is my wet dream comes true!!! I can just ride on those over size Chanel goodies on the carousel over and over haha….

Don’t you wish you can have one of this giant Chanel bags in your living room?

Designer Guns & Chainsaw For Gaudy Campy Tramps

Posted in Art & Music, Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Versace with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 19, 2009 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Ok ok! We all have weakness for those fabulous goodies from our favorite designer brands and love treating ourselves with something pretty from their collections. But normal fashionistas like the most of us usually get a latest ” it ” bag, cashmere sweaters, shoes or sunglasses from our favorite designers, but if those items no longer tickle your fancies, then why not pick up these “Gaudy-Fab” items from the artist Peter Gronquist for his art exhibit “The Revolution will be Fabulous” in Los Angeles! So you can be shooting caribou in style! haha…. each weapon looks god-awful. That said, I’m sure they’ll sell like hot cakes. Oh wait, they have.

I think my favorite Gaudy Weapon will be the CHANEL bazooka! haha

The Simpsons & Super Model Linda Evangelista Do Haute Couture !

Finally!! Marge Simpson has peeled off her tired green tube dress and cheap pearls for something just a little more FAB!! I love this Harper’s (August, 2007) spread. it’s beautifully ridiculous and so well done!

It was genius to include the ultimate supermodel
Linda Evangelista, as she is in my opinion, just as much an icon of the last decade as the hilariously jaundiced family. Watching these fabulous illustrations makes me say J’adore Bazaar! Here’s the spread itself, along with the garments the illustrations were based on from each designers.

VERSACE
& Donatella

Linda looks fierce as she does in the flesh and Donatella, well… Donatella kinda looks like a fleshed-out cartoon character anyway. Marge looks as fresh-faced as the day Homer married her.
CHANEL & Karl Lagerfeld

Lanvin & Elbaz
Jean Paul Gaultier

Viktor & Rolf

Louis Vuitton

& Marc Jacobs

Aren’t these illustrations fabulous!? ok, Me & Mei-Mei need to go now, ’cause Lacroix is waiting for me for the final fitting of the Couture gown I just got last week! Au revoir for now !! xoxo Alan + mei-mei the pug 🙂
