As the Halloween is just around the corner, all of the fashionistas are busy finding the perfect outfit & accessories for their big Halloween parties. So today we would like to show you some of our favorite designer looks that will make you look scarily fabulous this Halloween!

Halloween is the one of the oldest holidays still celebrated today. It’s one of the most popular holidays, second only to Christmas. So before we start showing you all the fabulous designer outfits & accessories we’ve found for your stylish Halloween Parties, I would like to share with you a little of the history and facts of Halloween! What is it actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? After knowing a little history of Halloween, it will make your Halloween holiday celebration even more fascinating.

The word itself, “Halloween” actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, “All Hollows Day” (or “All Saints Day”), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

The Rebirth Of The New Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2011 Collection

Posted in Alexander McQueen, fashion with tags , on October 28, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

All I can say is Bravo, Sarah Burton! After the tragic death of the super talented (and my favorite designer) Alexander McQueen, everyone is wondering what is going to happen to this legendary fashion power house, who shocked and awed us season after season of McQueen’s sometimes dark & gothic glamorous creations. Sarah Burton has worked beside McQueen for over 15 years and in her first major fashion after taken over the house of McQueen, she has successfully pay a homage to the signature McQueen looks & tradition and a sense of herself.

As we all remembered that McQueen is famous for his beautiful sharp, structured cuts in his garments, from shoulders, to the hemlines, it is glamorous with a masculine undertone, but with Sarah Burton’s debut collection, I feel that maybe because of her gender as a woman, it has played a big role on this new collection. Start from the very beginning of the show, you can see the usually sharp and arch upwards shoulder line on the signature McQueen tailored jackets, the shoulder line has been slashed open, so it drapes down a little also the ruffled details on the lapel and hem are cut in raw edges, it totally soften the McQueen signature structured look and adds a bit more femininity touch to it.

Also as most of Alexander McQueen’s inspirations are often dark, almost a little uncomfortable feeling to it, but she adds her own twist, maybe I say a more “positive” energy in her inspiration …. A pagan, earth-mother spirit, flower child feel to this new collection which you can see from various of floral or leaf pattern laser cut out leather pants & dresses, white cotton canvas tailor jackets & pants with raw edges, raffia-trimmed brocade, butterflies motifs, feathers to the basket weaves hair detail….. all gives a feeling a loving mother-earth, rebirth kind of positive feeling to it. I just LOVE this new collection!

Alexander McQueen Fall Winter 2010 Final Show Was Beautiful, Solemn, Funereal & a Little Spooky

Posted in Alexander McQueen with tags , , , , , on March 10, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Yesterday at the Paris fall winter 2010 fashion week, our beloved fashion designer Alexander McQueen whom pass away couple weeks ago had an appointment only salon presentation of his last collection that he was working on before his tragic death.

In his latest & last collection, McQueen got back to what he loved the most, the hand craftsmanship of the Haute Couture and the things that are been lost in the making of fashion. He was inspired by the art of the Dark Ages, a sense of poetic, medieval beauty that dealt with religious iconography. In the show, it had a hunting soundtrack of operatic music in the background, the presentation was solemn, funereal and a little spooky.

McQueen’s bi-annual fashion show extravaganza had always been the highlights of the Paris or London fashion week, and a Must-See show for every fashion editors, photographers and fashionistas! Instead of the usual big production show, yesterday’s intimate setting allowed the guests having the opportunity for an up-closed appreciations of the details of his masterpieces, and honored his designs for the very last time.

By mixing the new technology with arts from the past, he had digitally transferred the paintings of high-church angels and Bosch demons into hand-loomed jacquards fabrics to create a caped gowns & dresses. Also there was a golden color feather long jacket that was painstakingly hand covered each feather with 24K gold leaves then sewn on to the jacket one by one to created this angelic look paired with a puffy embroidered tulle long skirt.

There were tears in the eyes of some of the guests as the finale dress walked down the runway. There were some talks about the possible succession designer Gareth Pugh will take over the house of McQueen, but for us, there will only be one Alexander McQueen!

Here is a video done by my one of my favorite online store Net-a-Porter.com to pay tribute to Alexander McQueen

Also click on the video player below to see some of my favorite McQueen fashion shows. To see the whole collection of McQueen’s shows since year 2002, you can click here to visit AlexanderMcQueen.com

Rest in peace Mr. McQueen! You’ll be missed!

Until next time, be well and look fabulous!

Mother Nature Inspired Fashions

Posted in Alexander McQueen, Nature & Animal Inspired on January 26, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Nature has always been a fine inspirer for fashion designers and artists. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy from their fashion house “Rodarte” took the concept to a whole new level when they drew upon the graceful and fierce Siamese fighting fish for their latest fall/winter 2008 collection.

The delicate flowy dresses seemed to even have emulated the fragile silhouettes of the exotic fish as well as the vivid yet soothing colors of the marine beauty.

The stunning collection is infused with an extraordinary joie di vivir (The joy of living) that contagiously spills over to each and every design making every dress as special as if it were crafted by some ethereal force of nature itself.
